Before It Was a #Hashtag: History

With the abundance of hashtags we see on social media, it’s almost impossible to remember how they all got started. If you forget, the # symbol starting out representing a number, or at least the battleground for an epic match of Tic Tac Toe. Soon after, we started using the character to help our music (half) step it up, or give our algorithmic code a breather. Today, whether you use it to make ASCII art, end a voicemail recording or just as a sign that you’ve messed up your latest batch of waffles, hashtags mean more to us than over-promoted tweets or Facebook posts desperate for attention.
