Over 35,000 runners and nearly half a million spectators attended the 118th annual Boston Marathon. The event was momentous for many reasons, not the least of which the fact that it was the first Boston marathon since the 2013 bombings.

The 2014 Boston Marathon saw its first American winner in 31 years, Meb Keflezighi, with a time of 2:08:37. Rita Jeptoo, of Kenya, took first place among women with a time of 2:18:57.

With humorous signs, race side kisses, a marriage proposal at the finish line and more, Boston runners and attendees proved that in the face of adversity they can band together with strength, humor and – of course – beer.
