Self-described as the “front page of the internet,” Reddit is a collection of user-submitted text, links, photos, videos and comments. Six percent of online adults happen to use Reddit according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. Pew examined Reddit as a standalone platform for the first time which revealed that young men in particular favor the site most. 15% of male internet users ages 18-29 say that they use Reddit, compared to just 5% of women in the same age range and almost double the 8% of men ages 30-49 in the next generation up. Overall, men are twice as likely to use Reddit than women! Also, people under 50 are significantly more likely to frequent the site versus those 50 or older.
Reddit is an active community that plays host to a variety of subreddits or topics ranging from technology news, animal GIF’s, comics, landscape photography to basically every single niche topic you can dream of. Reddit can be a powerful stage to rally for important causes like #restorethefourth or crowdfunding political change, all the way to a platform for some of the silliest and most absurd humor you have ever laid eyes on!
The popularity and thus prominence of the various material submitted to the site is determined by votes from the Reddit community. The community is pretty diverse and more common among urban and suburban residents than among those folks living in rural areas. In reality, just 2% of internet users above age 50 and older—and 2% of rural residents—say they use the site.
