Food Transformed into Extraordinary Sculptures of Ordinary Things

Have you ever made an impromptu sculpture out of one of your meals, like creating a waffle house or a volcano of spaghetti? Romanian artist Dan Cretu sees the potential for art in all the foods he encounters. His work often transforms the most basic nourishment like fruits, vegetables, seeds, and even slices of salami, into exquisite food art. Since taking on this genre of edible artistry, Dan’s creative motivation can be sparked anytime opening a refrigerator or taking a trip to the local grocery store.

The imaginative artist says:

All objects and things around us daily are possible subjects for me. The challenge is to transform a common object that we don’t notice anymore into something unusual, alive, and appealing.

This can prove to be a difficult task considering the associations our brains make differentiating from one object to the next. Plus, since food has a short shelf life, Cretu says it’s important to work fast before the grub becomes dried out, sour, or loses color. Cretu’s imagination runs wild, producing some uncanny constructions of everyday items made out of food. His masterpieces below represent easily recognizable objects made out of unusual things, like a bicycle made out of oranges, a vegetarian box of matches, an organic transistor radio, and even a chocolate bar molded into the shape of a keyboard — all of which look tantalizingly good to gobble!
