Apple has announced the 2013 winners of this year’s Apple Design Awards, at the WWDC, which recognize “apps that raise the bar in design, technology, and innovation.”
This year eleven apps were chosen which include WWF Together, Procreate, Badland, Yahoo! Weather, Letterpress, Ridiculous Fishing, Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders, Coda 2, Evernote, Finish. and mosaic.io. The winners happen to include two apps made by student developer teams: Finish was developed by Ryan Orbuch and Michael Hansen while they were sophomores at Boulder High School in Colorado and developed by MIT students Ishaan Gulrajani and Alex List and University of Pittsburgh student Zain Shah (from my alma mater). Apple also showcased three student scholarship winners who were asked to develop an app to describe their experience and background. The winners include Louis Harboe, of the University Laboratory High School, created the “My Adventure book”, which presents a scrolling list of photos and videos that can be zoomed to reveal further details about his favorite apps, academics, life experiences, friends, and family.
Here are the eleven Apple Design Award winners from 2013:
WWF Together
WWF Together is an amazing iPad app that allows you to experience the world’s most astounding animals by bringing you closer to the real stories of giant pandas, tigers, polar bears, and many other interesting endangered species.
Procreate
Procreate is an art studio app exclusive to the iPad. It comes equipped with features like true-to-life pencil sets, inks, brushes, advanced layer compositing and other unique digital tools.
Badland
Badland is a sidescrolling action adventure game taking place in an enchanted-like forest. The game can be played in either single or multi-player mode and is available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Yahoo! Weather
Yahoo! Weather is highly rated app that displays the weather details coupled with stunning photography based on the location, time of day and current local conditions. Yahoo! Weather is available in 30 languages and optimized to work on all current iOS devices.
Letterpress
Letterpress is a simple yet highly-addictive wordgame only available on the iOS.
Ridiculous Fishing
Ridiculous Fishing is a never-ending tale of redemption in an infinite arcade world about fishing weapons, chainsaws and toasters. It’s available on the iOS and iPhone 5 currently.
Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders
Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders is a World War II arcade-style fighting game in which players get into dogfights, protect fleets of ships, and attack enemy bases. The game is exclusive to the OS X and iOS.
Coda 2
Coda 2 is a modern and incredibly innovative all-in-one editor for designing web code and is available on the Mac.
Evernote
Evernote 5 for the Mac is a popular note-taking and archiving service that helps you remember everything. Evernote happens to be one of our favorite apps and Chrome extensions!
Finish.
Finish. is a streamlined task manager which uses cool gestures to help people organize their to-do lists into short, mid, and long-term tasks. Finish was inspired by procrastinating students during finals weeks and is optimized for the iPhone 5.
mosaic.io
mosaic.io as a way to connect two or more iOS devices around a single image, and is available on the iPhone and iPad.
