Painting With Fire: Artist Masters the Amazing Ability to Create Art Using Candle Flames
Have you ever seen someone paint with fire? For the last 14 years, artist Steve Spazuk has developed and perfected the extraordinary technique of using flames from a candle or torch to create remarkable paintings.
Spazuk first uses the trails of soot from the flames to draw his subjects and then uses various tools to sculpt and etch the soot into shapes. While it looks as though he manipulates the flames to paint his intended drawings, Spazuk often has no idea what he will create and usually explores the patterns, lines and shapes in the soot to guide his drawings.
On his website, Spazuk elaborates on his creative process:
Spontaneity and chance are the heart and soul of his creative process. He does not censor. He does not direct. Spazuk opens himself to the experience. This in-the-moment creative practice coupled with the fluidity of the soot, creates a torrent of images, shadows and light. Fuelled by the quest of a perfect shape that has yet to materialize, he concentrate in a meditative act and surrender to capture the immediacy of the moment on canvas.
