Just in Time for Father’s Day, Watch Jim Carrey Speak on the Way His Dad Inspired Him to Follow His Dream [VIDEO]
If you had to choose between what you think is a sure thing and taking a chance to pursue your dream, which would you choose? In his recent commencement address to the Maharishi School of Management, comedian Jim Carrey talked about the way his late father’s life decisions inspired him to follow the beat of his own drum – a fitting topic to revisit now as Father’s Day approaches.
Growing up, Carrey watched his father deny himself the opportunity of pursuing his dream of becoming a comedian, making a “conservative choice” instead to work as an accountant. But when Carrey turned 12, his father lost his job, and Carrey learned that even the surest bets aren’t guarantees. “You can fail at what you don’t want,” he told the graduating class, “so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
Inspired by this lesson learned secondhand from his father, Carrey chose to pursue his own dream of becoming a professional comedian rather than follow a more conventional career path. And as he lived to prove, this was one of the best decisions he ever made:
What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it.
So how about it: will you ask the universe for what you really want?
