‘The Bells of Amsterdam’: A Tilt-Shift City Timelapse Set to the Bells of Westerkerk Tower
How does a photographer manage to capture the bustle of a city? Pieter Manders set out to answer that question when he filmed a timelapse video that captures a panoramic view of Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands.
To highlight the movement of large numbers of pedestrians, bikers, buses, light rail trains, cars and even boats, Manders uses a tilt-shift technique. He blurs out pieces of the foreground and background, focusing in on streets and sidewalks full of life. To make the timelapse even more special and characteristic of Amsterdam, Manders set the video to the sounds of the Westerkerk Tower bells, part of the Dutch protestant church Westerkerk, located in the center of the city.
