Activist Helps Legalize Same-Sex Marriage via the ‘Washington Bus,’ Proposes to Partner on Same Bus in Heartwarming Tale

Meet Jeanne. She serves on the board of the Washington Bus, a nonprofit organization that rides around Seattle looking to engage young people and help inform them of the important issues facing our democracy. Jeanne believes that we all should have the right to “stand next to,” love and marry whoever we choose in life. Her organization was instrumental in helping pass Referendum 74, which legalized same-sex marriage in Washington.

There are certain moments in life when some of the causes that we have desperately fought for come to realization. This is one of those times: Jeanne was able to publicly propose to her partner Alissa on the very same bus that helped spur the change that let this happen!

In a heartwarming story Alissa wrote: “On July 30th I was pulled out of a meeting because of a ‘disturbance’ on the street. When I got to my office window, I saw my girlfriend standing on a bus across the street. What came next was the most genuine, funny, heartfelt marriage proposal.

Just the night before, we were talking about romance and I pretty much told her she wasn’t romantic. I am eating crow … and will be for a long time.”
No, those aren’t your allergies acting up: this is what it feels like when love conquers hate!
