Textile Collages of African Wildlife Combine Art and Fabric in Colorful Creations
Artist Sophie Standing creates a colorful African safari in her artwork, where she combines fabric and textile work with nature, art and design. Born in England, Standing moved to Cape Town, South Africa in 2003 and now lives in Karen, Kenya. She uses the wildlife – animals, flora and fauna – around her as inspiration for her works of art.
Standing makes her creations by first sketching her images onto canvas and then appliqueing fabrics onto the sketched canvases. She finishes the pieces by drawing details over the fabric with a sewing machine, using a variety of colors to create what looks like textile collages.
Standing has a background in wood, metal, ceramics and textiles from Liverpool Hope University. She has worked with all of the different mediums, with her most recent interest in textile art. Standing’s African wildlife pieces and art allow her to combine the beauty of the world around her with her passion for fabrics and textiles.
