Modern, Artistic Arrangements of Microscopic Organisms That Look Like Jewels [PHOTOS]

Diatoms are microscopic, single-cell algae encased in jewel-like shells. They are among the smallest organisms on the planet, and are also the medium for scientist Klaus Kemp to capture beautiful and artistic arrangements of the algae under a microscope. Some of the earliest diatom arrangements date back to the Victorian era and Kemp has dedicated his life to studying and perfecting modern-day arrangements.
You can see and learn about Kemp’s process in a short video by filmmaker Matthew Killip, entitled “The Diatomist.”
