On 12th Anniversary, The New Yorker Commemorates 9/11 by Republishing Poignant Covers
Today marks the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the downfall of United flight 93. To pay tribute to the victims of those attacks and the valor of our servicemen, and to point out the cultural changes that have taken place since that day in 2001, The New Yorker has republished some of its most telling, commemorative covers. Over time you can see the illustrations grow from somber and honorary to more satirical and abstract. Below are those we found most striking.
“9/11/2001” by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly, September 24, 2001
“Street Scene” by Edward Sorel, October 1, 2001
“Local Heroes” by Peter de Sève, October 29, 2001
“What So Proudly We Hailed” by Carter Goodrich, November 5, 2001
“Soaring Spirit” by John Mavroudis and Owen Smith, September 11, 2006
“Reflections” by Ana Juan, September 12, 2011
