Interesting Mobile and App Statistics
The use of smartphones is growing exponentially each year. In fact, smartphones sales are projected to grow 300% between now and 2019, according to Information Week. With the increased popularity of smartphones, a growing demand for apps is sure to follow. It will be interesting to see how the four major smartphone platforms: Apple iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry, will fare in terms of growing popularity and usage rates.
Regardless of the type of smartphone, mobile users have definite preferences across the board when it comes to the way they use their devices and the type of apps they prefer. Most of the apps that are downloaded for smartphones are games. However, messaging and social apps are growing in popularity as well, and the popular messaging app WhatsApp Messenger, is currently one of the top free apps downloaded for smartphones. We have reached the point where the majority of social media activity is performed on mobile devices; and users are consuming almost 1/4 of their media consumption on mobile devices.
In Benedict Evans’ presentation “Mobile is eating the world“, he clearly illustrates how smartphone usage has eclipsed conventional PC usage 3 to 1. Differences persist from platform to platform in regards to how much users are willing to pay for apps (with Apple iOS users leading the pack in terms of money spent on apps). But the potential is certainly there for mobile software developers to create apps that will be used by millions of people.
