2013 will forever go down as the year of the selfie – even Oxford Dictionary named the term Word of the Year. But selfies aren’t just some byproduct of Instagram or Snapchat; taking pictures of one’s self has actually been around for quite some time. Think about Van Gogh’s self-portraits, or selfies people took with the first Polaroid camera. Just because we can easily dispose of our cameras and even messages these days doesn’t make the modern-day selfie that much different from that of the past: we just have more technology now to pull them off more easily. But that doesn’t mean you need to hit up all your friends on Facebook with that food or no-makeup selfie!
