Four out of every five employers want new graduates who have completed a formal internship. On the employee side, 70 percent who complete a paid internship feel ready; 58 percent who complete an unpaid internship feel ready. Only 44 percent who do not complete an internship feel ready for the job market. Completing an internship can help boost your confidence during a job interview, which, in turn, will help you be more persuasive.
One in five employers worldwide can’t fill important positions because they can’t find people with soft skills. Find opportunities to bolster the following skills and characteristics: motivation, interpersonal skills, appearance, punctuality and flexibility. This will only help strengthen your quest to land that dream job. It’ll also help if you do your research and homework on prospective employers. Be careful that your own personal websites and social media pages are clean—91 percent of employers screen applicants’ social networking pages.
During a job interview, be positive and enthusiastic, give a strong handshake, smile and make eye contact and dress appropriately and professionally. Do not try to promise more than you can realistically deliver—you’d only be setting yourself up for stress and failure. Exhibit credibility during the interview and be honest about your experience and qualifications. After your interview, be absolutely sure to write a thank you note and reinforce why you’d be a good fit.
