An exciting new fuel-efficient concept car could make independent driving a reality for people in wheelchairs. Most of us are fortunate enough to not even be able to imagine what life would be like with a dissability, as it can be easy to take everyday actions like walking, running or even driving a car for granted. And even though many communities have went to great lengths to improve accessibility to buildings for all, the automotive industry has been lagging until now. The EQUAL car being crowdsourced on Indiegogo, has an innovative and pretty spiffy design specifically with the needs of disabled folks in mind through a unique entry system in the back instead of the side doors on a regular car. Also no mechanical linkage is required between a person’s wheelchair and the vehicle, which allows for a clear path for a disabled person to simply enter or exit the car without ever having to remove their wheelchair!
EQUAL – Car For Disabled People
The car is being developed by Absolute Design based out of Croatia, founded by two professional vehicle designers Vedran Martinek and Dario Dropucic whom are passionate about this idea of making independent transportation accessible to all.
“We launched this campaign because our project has great potential and now’s the right time for us to present our own vehicle to the world; the vehicle that has purpose and will significantly change lives of disabled people,” writes the team on EQUAL’s Indiegogo page. “Disabled people don’t want to emphasize on their disability in any way and they want to be treated like everybody else. We addressed that by designing the car in that way so when you see it on the street you can’t notice if the person driving is in the wheelchair or not. We achieved that with many small details but mainly by raising the shoulder line which also gave the car more aggressive forward stance.”
