10 Signs You’ve Been Blogging for Too Long

You don’t have to blog for long before you begin to spot some patterns in your work. Reaching this point, though, could be both a good and a bad sign. Repetition makes things easier to execute, you see, but doing the same actions every day can also drive you stir crazy. To write interesting content, you have to be sharp, in the right mindstate. So what are some tell-tale signs you need refresh your mind and take a break from blogging?

1. You Know Within a $1 Margin of Error How Much Adsense Revenue You Made that Day, Before Looking
At the end of each day I like to play a game where I guess how much Adsense revenue the site has made that day. The scary thing is, I’ve been right five nights in a row, now, within $1 of the actual amount. I’m not sure if this means I’ve been fine-tuning my brain into some kind of revenue analyzing machine, or if it’s a sign I need to get some fresh air. But keeping an eye on your financial gains from blogging isnt such a terrible thing, I suppose; you should be much more concerned if your blog hasn’t earned much at all.

2. You Already Know How Many Likes or Retweets a Post Is Going to Receive Before You Share It
No one knows your audience better than you do, I’ll give you that. But if you can peg how many likes or retweets an article is going to receive before sharing it, you might need to shake things up.

3. You’ve Posted to Your Facebook Page as Yourself, Instead of Your Page, More Times Than You Can Remember
We bloggers get excited after finishing a new article and would love to publish and share it as soon as possible. Sometimes when posting to Facebook, though, we go directly to our page and forget to change views from acting as ourselves to our businesses. When this happens we blow the opportunity to post, as our piece will appear as a user message and not an official post on the page’s timeline.

4. You’ve Tweeted Using the Wrong Account More Often Than You’d Care to Admit
Everyone has at least ten Twitter accounts these days, so keeping them straight on a tweet-by-tweet basis can be quite the juggling act.

5. You Don’t Want to Upgrade to the New Version of WordPress Because It Will Break One of Your Trusted Plugins That Hasn’t Been Updated in Years
WordPress is a great content management system, but it can get ugly if your site depends on too many plugins. Forget about your fear of upgrading, and go clean up your site.

6. You’ve Posted “Breaking News” off an Old RSS Feed Link From a Few Weeks Ago
Depending on your reader app or the feeds you follow, sometimes old links get sent out as if they were new. I’ve learned that you should always verify when an article was written before you treat it as breaking news.

7. When Someone Asks You if You’re on So.cl You Reply You Gave up Southern Comfort Years Ago
Microsoft has their own social network called So.cl, though you’ve probably never heard of it yet. The thing is, if you have heard of it, it’s a sign you probably need a break from social media as well as blogging. You simply know too much.

8. Movies Make You Nervous: As Soon As the “Featured Presentation” Is Announced, You Begin to Worry about Whether You Correctly Saved the Fonts to Your Last PowerPoint Presentation on SlideShare
Have you ever tried uploading a PowerPoint to SlideShare? Experimenting with fonts is like playing Russian Roulette. The stress of it will eat at you long after the presentation is published and shared.

9. You Think of Alexa As a Teenage Brat Who Likes to Judge Your Site As If It Were an Episode of American Idol
Fortunately for you, the bots evaluating your site are less subjective toward the color of your hair and the rendition of “Since You’ve Been Gone” you pulled off in the shower this morning.

10. Your Blood Pressure Rises and Falls Based on Changes to Your Klout Score
If you are spending most of your day getting worked up over digits and analytics instead of creating fresh content, you may have forgotten what blogging is all about. It may be time you took a breather.
