16 Things All Creatives Should Know, as Told by the Ultimate ‘Mad Men’ Don Draper
Leave it to Mad Men‘s Don Draper to speak the cold hard truth about creative work. All too aware of clients’ fickle tastes and the ethical dilemmas of working in advertising, Draper has become a hardened veteran of the industry. This is why Mad Men fans will never forget Draper’s Lucky Strikes campaign (“Everybody else’s tobacco is poisonous. Lucky Strikes’…is toasted”) or when he promised to reinvigorate the agency’s work toward the end of Season Four, saying, “We’re gonna sit at our desks typing while the walls fall down around us. Because we’re the least important most important thing there is.”
As cynical as he sometimes is, though, Draper is also an expert on motivating creatives to do their best work: “Our worst fears lie in anticipation,” he said.
Before you scroll down on this journey through Draper’s creative wisdom, I leave you with one last priceless quote:
Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It’s freedom from fear. It’s a billboard on the side of the road that screams reassurance that whatever you are doing is okay. You are okay.
