#DOMA Is Gone: The Nation Reacts

#LoveIsLove meme

Today the Nation is abuzz with news of the Supreme Court’s rulings supporting the right to same-sex marriage. First on the chopping block was the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage as only between a man and woman. If passed, DOMA would have prohibited gay couples from experiencing the benefits of married couples at the federal level, even if they were legally married in their state. Next the Supreme Court dismissed Proposition 8, which had paused same-sex marriages in California.

Upon their ruling, the Sumpreme Court announced, “DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.” You can read the full text of the ruling here.

People’s reactions on Twitter and Instagram have been phenomenal. Here are some of the best reactions to today’s Supreme Court Rulings:

  1. “If passed, DOMA would have prohibited…” Actually, DOMA passed during Bill Clinton’s presidency and has been in effect ever since. Now it has been struck down as unconstitutional.
